CCL’s newest digital press for smart labels & packaging in health and personal care

Canada-headquartered global label, security, and packaging solutions provider CCL Industries has installed the world’s first HP Indigo 35K digital press at its healthcare label facility in Montreal. The Indigo 35K is the company’s 100th HP Indigo digital press. CCL’s global fleet of HP Indigo digital label presses runs at more than 60 sites worldwide across its CCL Label, CCL Design, Avery, and Checkpoint operations.
The decision by CCL to install the Indigo 35K is to diversify further to the folding carton market. The new B2 sheetfed press for cartons and specialty boards offers high-definition printing, security inks, and variable data printing for track-and-trace solutions and security elements. As a result, the Indigo folding carton solution can deliver multi-layered brand protection applications in a single pass to serve the health and personal care, plastic card, and high-end folding carton markets at the Montreal plant.

According to HP, the new Indigo 35K press provides premium color and print quality with 40% overall higher productivity than earlier – thanks to faster job changeover, color accuracy with Spot Mater, and a more robust paper path from the feeder to the coater. Additional features include printing on thinner substrates from 150 microns to capture applications such as rigid boxes and a new HD printing with 1600 dpi for enhanced print quality.
Other enhancements are a new HP Indigo ElectroInk Premium White for higher opacity, a new ElectroInk Invisible Yellow, and track-and-trace solutions with security elements for multi-layered brand protection applications in a single pass. There is also a new version of the inline Tresu iCoat coater.
The CCL fleet of more than 100 HP digital presses spans the breadth of the Indigo portfolio, including narrow-web and mid-web label and packaging presses, as well as the B2 sheetfed HP Indigo 30000 and commercial HP Indigo 12000. “The continued evolution of HP Indigo’s digital print technologies opens new markets, applications, and possibilities for our customers. We are incredibly pleased for CCL to reach their 100th HP Indigo press operating in their global network,” said Haim Levit, general manager of the Indigo company. “We are seeing continued market momentum in smart label and packaging solutions with the need for brands to boost production protection.”
According to MarketsandMarkets, the global self-adhesive labels market is likely to grow at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2020 to 2025. This growth should take it from US$ 46.5 billion in 2020 to US$ 59.2 billion by 2025. An increase in eCommerce is forecast to drive the self-adhesive label markets in North America and Europe and increased demand for packaged food and beverages in the developing countries.
